CNN Reports on Chicago killings
CNN reporter Don Lemon positioned the dramatic rise in youth homicides against the President and First Lady's inspirational appearances during the graduation season. The comparison was intense and dramatic.
The reporting was relatively balanced, with pundits, police chiefs and mothers of the murdered giving a range of causal perspectives.
That all children are teachable, that a college education is crime abatement, that local universities should be active in recruiting early, often and in urban areas were the key assumptions that challenged the status quo.
Will any of this stop, cease or slow the killings? Will challenging these assumptions lead to a change in how we view who these children are, who is responsible for them, what should be done with those who have killed and what must be done for those who have been the victims? We can't really treat the victims and the criminals the same, even if they are children, right?
